One Room Challenge – Week 2: Demo Day

Hey friends! So I jumped into this One Room Challenge a few days late and wow, do we have a lot to do! Chip Gaines has me wanting to yell Demo Day everytime we start a project around here. That terrifies my hubs. He’s like, “please don’t take a sledgehammer to things”. Hmmm, no promises.  We’ve got the space cleared {minus the washer + dryer as I need those suckers on the daily!}, the tile has been torn out, nails holes patched. It’s seriously ready for the next steps! Honestly, my hubby is the laborer for the most part. He pulled out the tile countertops and he’ll install the sink as well as the floor tiles. He will also be building the wood countertop and shelf for me. I am the painter though. In all the projects I paint. So the walls and cabinets will be my thing. As will the decorating cause who doesn’t love that part? OK – not everyone but I really do love the end – when everything comes together and you can stand back and admire how much ass you kicked. Know what I’m saying?? I think you do.

I plan to paint the walls this week. I chose Shiplap by Magnolia. I used Magnolia paint for another project and I was really happy with it. The colors are so awesome. This one is basically a version of white. I might be adding a bit of shiplap to one of the walls so this seemed pretty appropriate. Here is a peak if you’d like to see the actual color. It seems to have a hint of grey to it but it’s still neutral which is the plan. I definitely stay away from whites that have yellow undertones in them. I also like a bit of variation between the walls and baseboards which are of course, white.

I have two colors that I am a bit torn between for the cabinets. I bought samples of both and I seriously can’t decide! I have asked opinions of friends + family and guess what? It’s pretty divided. Silverado Sage by Magnolia was one of my first picks. I think it’s gorgeous. It will definitely pop against the black + white that will be in the rest of the room.

But then I found this amazing laundry room over at The Learner Observer and I became obsessed with the Lichon color that she chose. I will say that she has better natural light and she also chose to paint her walls pink and add this fun wallpaper. It might not look as pretty in my room since none of those things are happening in my space. Oh how I’d love to have an actual window in my laundry room! Unfortunately, this is not an option as it shares a wall with my garage. That view would not be a pretty one. #ohheyclutter

I’m curious – what color do you prefer?

We have a sink picked out. It’s stainless steel and not too fancy but it’ll do the job. We don’t want to break the bank with this makeover but we also want things that will look nice and are of decent quality. An apron front sink in this space? Yes says my heart, no says my budget. Ha ha! We will also add a simple pull-down faucet as we want to be able to use this sink for cleaning all the things. You know, things like washing mountain bike + firefighter accessories cause that’s kinda the thing around here! Plus if I want to do flower arrangements and light gardening, it’s an option. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gone to the guest bathroom to find things soaking in the sink. Seriously. It happens. I’d also like to switch out the silver knobs for something more fun. I’m leaning towards black although I could do something else in silver but I want more of a fun finish. What we have now are the original builder grade knobs and they are  B O R I N G. Hobby Lobby has the knobs that I am hoping to use but I am waiting for them to go on sale. Do you shop at Hobby Lobby? It seems that either everything in on sale or nothing at all. This week is the nothing phase. So I will check back next week because $4 versus $2 is a big deal x’s 10! Right?

Here is my inspiration:

T O  D O

  • paint walls
  • install shiplap on one wall
  • paint cabinets
  • switch out knobs
  • build custom countertop
  • create ‘kitty privacy’ aka ‘operation hide the litter box’
  • install tile floors

We are also contemplating moving our washer and dryer to a different wall. This would really create space to have shelves for individual laundry baskets for each of us. Or at least one for each bedroom. I have a call into a couple of plumbers to see what this might entail and cost. It might not be in the cards but it doesn’t hurt to ask. If not, my plan B is to hang baskets from the wall to hold each person’s folded laundry so that they can grab their basket, unload it in their room and return it to the laundry room. I have a long-standing habit of always folding laundry in the laundry room. The clean + folded laundry hangs out in the laundry room until my youngest distributes it to its owner/room. The thing that makes me crazy is how quickly this pile turns into a mountain of clothes before my helper gets to it and that I don’t have a great place to fit it out of the way.

The above is how things are currently laid out. I’d love to flip the washer and dryer to the back wall because then we could extend our counter a bit to accommodate basket cubbies. Fingers crossed that it’s not a huge expense!

By next week, we should be seeing some progress. My firefighter hubby heads to work Friday and Saturday so those are great days for me to get to painting. I am so excited for this transformation. This space really does need some TLC and if I have to hang out in there, why not make it pretty?
