8 Creative Shelving Options + Making Over The Master Closet

Hey friends! I am currently getting ready to revamp my master closet which is pretty big and houses my clothing, shoes and the bulk of my home decor. Yes, it’s pretty much like a small version of HomeGoods in my closet. Yes, I am both proud and embarrassed by this statement. I pulled all the things out of there the other day. I have a sell pile, a donate pile and the rest is fairly organized and ready for a new ‘spot’.

Somehow I didn’t get a before pic {kicking myself for that} but here is the current status. Yes, this is the in-between process. I have things pulled down from some of the top shelves so they are taking up space on the floor. This is a project that I’d like to tackle soon so I am not putting everything back when I know it’ll be rehomed soon. Even with the purge, there is still a whole lotta stuff. I had to take several photos to get all of the angles. My goal is to add some super wide shelves where the dresser currently stands. I’ll move all of the home decor to that space so it’s hidden as it really overwhelms me to see it every time I walk into the space. I also don’t want to part with it as I do use it to seasonally switch out my home decor. I’d like to move the clothes to the end of the closet so that you can see them when you walk in and they won’t be off to the side. This will leave the long wall where the clothes were. I might add in some shelving there as I have a lot of photos albums + boxes as well as years of scrapbooks and other keepsakes. I’d like to keep all of that together. I will also need some kind of coat hooks to hold my bags and purses. My goal is to make this space feel organized and less cluttered. My oldest says that he feels like he’s going to die when he walks in here. Apparently, he’s afraid of things falling on his head. Maybe he shouldn’t come into my closet at all, right? Ha!

I know. I have a lot of stuff. And I bought a new purse today #sorrynotsorry

Closet Goals:

  • empty the entire closet
  • pull out the existing shelving
  • patch holes + paint the entire thing – goodbye blue, hello neutral
  • build in shelving that accommodates my clothing + shoes as well as all of my home decor
  • create space under clothes and shelves for additional storage
  • create a space for all of our ‘memories – photo albums + boxes and scrapbooks
  • build a smaller jewelry holder
  • install a row of hooks for my purses and bags

Visually, I love the rustic farmhouse look but I also like things to look very clean and neutral. This means that aside from neutral walls, I’ll likely incorporate dark stained wood for shelving. I know some people are burning out on the farmhouse thing but I still really love it. For me, it’s nostalgic because I grew up going to my grandparent’s ranch house which had so many of the elements of the modern day farmhouse. An old barn, shiplap and loads of character.

Here is some shelving inspiration that I’d love to incorporate into my own home organization + decor. Pssssst – I am NOT a fan of wire closet shelving so that is not an option. Nope. Hard no. Not happening.

I love the industrial look as it still has that rustic vibe to me. The downside? The metal pipes can get pretty pricey if you are on a budget. I love this unit built by Ana White. She has the plans if you want to DIY as well.

Here is cool set using old pallets by Made in the Meadows. I can not find the original link but I see the watermark so I definitely want to give credit to them.

Little Glass Jar created these custom wood shelves for her pantry but they might be perfect for the shelving I’d like to add to my closet.

This screams farmhouse. I love how bright and clean it looks but once I add in all my stuff to this space, it wouldn’t look so bright + cheery. #reallife I can’t find the original source to this one either.

Love Create Celebrate gave her a closet a rustic vibe by adding wood to the ceiling.

How nice would this piece from World Market be in a closet? ALL THAT STORAGE!

This tie rack at Craftaholics Anonymous is pretty awesome but I’d use it to hold all of my bags and purses {yes, I have THAT many}.

I love the next two photos and I’d love to give credit to someone for how awesome they are but they came from Google without anything to link back to.

I love redoing a space. Not only does it make me take inventory of what I have, purge what I don’t need and lighten my material load, it also gives me joy to see a space transformed. Even if you live in an older house, you can make it feel new or you can make a new house feel old if that’s your thing. It really is a thing for some people. I swear đŸ˜‰

TIP: If you have a large pile of items to get rid of when you makeover a space – donate or sell it! I have a pile of clothes and purses headed to a woman’s shelter, I took a load to Snowline Hospice this morning and I sold about $80 on Facebook Marketplace last night. Just decide what is worth selling. Sometimes selling can take a lot of time and energy so make sure that it’s worth the energy.

I can feel fall in the air and it makes me so happy! I am currently sitting outside soaking up these awesome temps. I hope you are having a great week. Do something that makes you smile today.
