How I Decorate With Neutrals

Years ago, I’d try to do some bold decorating move like painting my mantel red or my bathroom a lovely shade of blue. I quickly tired of it and before I knew it, I was repainting the space to something neutral. Hence, why I decorate with neutrals. I am also a fan of redecorating a space. What I learned is that I like a neutral base and then I add in fun pops of color using various decor. These are items that can be easily switched out when I tire of a certain color or style.

It took several years of decorating before I had this ‘ah ha’ moment and it all clicked. I almost always pick neutral furniture and neutral paint.

I love grays but the base of our house leans more towards the tans as that was the ‘in’ thing when we bought our house almost 13 years ago. We don’t feel overly outdated although there are a few things that could use a little refresh.

Most of our house is painted Faded Burlap by Valspar. I love this color. It is a perfect tan and it doesn’t feel like it has pink or yellow undertones like most tans tend to. It’s warm without being too dark.

Ways to stay neutral:

  • Paint/wall colors
  • Big pieces of furniture – couches, tables, beds, dressers, etc.
  • Rugs/carpet

Easy and inexpensive ways to add pops of color:

  • Curtains
  • Pillows
  • Art
  • Pots and vases
  • Frames
  • Small scale furniture

Seasonal decor is my jam. I love switching things up for the holidays and seasons. Keeping a neutral base allows this to be a somewhat inexpensive change-up. Unless you go to HomeGoods or Target. Then it becomes a not so inexpensive switch but so fun, right? 😉  I like to play the game where I allow myself a budget of what I am allowed to spend on decor. Of course, going in with cash is the best way to keep yourself if check. It’s also always fun to shop your own house and see how you can switch things up without adding clutter to your home or breaking the bank.

Neutral Inspiration:

I do love decorating but I find ideas and inspiration via other amazing bloggers. A lot of my decor ideas come from things I see on Instagram or Pinterest.

  1. Does the “Shades of Blue” picture show the Faded Burlap paint? I am leaning toward that color for my walls but really want a “true” example of the color itself. If could help me out.. thanks.

    1. Hi there! I have no idea what their paint color was. You might be able to go to their site for actual colors? I was just sharing pics of neutral spaces that I thought were pretty. I have since repainted my entire house in Hazelnut Cream which is brighter than Faded Burlap.
