$100 Room Makeover Challenge | Week 5 | Guest Room Reveal

Hey friends! So here we are at the end of another $100 room makeover challenge. If you have been following along then you know that I am working on making over my guest room. We have had some snafu’s with paint colors but everything else has been pretty seamless. A big thank you to Erin at Lemons, Lavender, and Laundry for starting this challenge and being an awesome cheerleader along the way.

So what has this challenge entailed?

  • painting furniture
  • convertingย a gorgeous wood screen into a custom headboard
  • adding free printables to existingย frames
  • styling the top of the armoire
  • adding a few textiles to the bed to pull the colors together

Let’s talk details, shall we?

I finallyย decided onย Magnolia Green and Iย really do love the color. I feel like it will work with my seasonal changes in this space {Hello fall and Christmas} as it has a neutral element to it. Can’t you see it with some orange accents for fall and red for Christmas? Plus I could easily switch up the framed art with more FREE printables.

I’ve had the armoire for years and it started as pine. It’s now officially been painted 3 times! The little side table/nightstand was a roadside find by my sister and she gifted it to me. It has some pretty carved details but it was painted white and a little beat up so it needed a refresh. FYI – cheap wood can be made to look more expensive with a good paint job. I have redone so many pieces covered in Formica and you’d never know it.

The screen for the headboard was a yard sale find last summer. I didn’t include it in my budget as I had bought it before this challenge came along. I actually thought that I was going to use it in my master bedroom makeover last year but I wasn’t ready to part with my sleigh bed just yet. It cost me $40. Can you believe it? It’s gorgeous and a super solid piece. My handyman aka hubby took off one panel as it was too big. We set that aside cause I am sure another project will come up that I can use it for. I noticed that World Market also has some similar wood screens but they retail at $230.

I had bought the bedding last fall when I wanted something neutral for my seasonal decor. What I had was a bit bright and had a whole lotta patterns happening. The upside, I think my old quilt will match the green in here if I want a change it up this summer. Similiar bedding here.

In styling a room you are basically adding some layers to tie it all together. For me, this means adding in some art, textiles and a few fun decor items. I have been adding books to my decor for some time. I decided to hit up the thrift store and I found a huge section of paperbacks that cost $1 for 10 books! Um, OK – I’m buying! I actually picked up a few to read as well plus one for an upcoming gallery wall project that I can not wait to bring to life and share with you. I used an old crate that I had in the attic on top of the armoire and I styled it with the old books plus a fun greenย bottle thatย I found at HomeGoods. I also added a few other accessories that I already had around my house. The nightstand has a few items from other rooms as well. The original lamp in the room was too short so I swapped it with another lamp in my house.

I added the funย  HELLO pennant to the bed using burlap I already had. I felt like it needed a little pop of something but I didn’t want to saturate the walls with art and ‘stuff’. At some point, I might try making a fun sign to go above the bed that says, be our guest, but that wasn’t happening this week.

In styling a space, you want to add some things to the wall. Even if you are going for a minimalist, you can add just a piece or two for a little eye candy. I had old frames that matched the headboard perfectly. I found these cute printables over at Magnolia. I loved that they were hand-drawn houseplants which tied into my green theme. I had originally planned to use some different printables but I didn’t love the shades of green as much as these. Plus these cuties are actually some of my favorite plants.

Let’s talk money spent, shall we?

My paint snafu kinda killed my budget which is a total bummer but I knew I couldn’t live with the second color and I didn’t want to do the whole room around that color and hate it + be out the money for matching decor. Did you follow that? Sheesh. Obviously, I have paint on the brain ๐Ÿ˜‰ I also feel like I need to channel Elsa from Frozen and just Let It Go already.

old booksย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย $1

vintage bottleย  ย  ย $3

TOTAL:ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  $94 or not including gift card $119

Other supplies used:

  • paint supplies –ย  I had tape, brushes, and rollers on hand.
  • frames – thankfully I have saved tons of frames that I have used in decor in my home over the years.
  • printables – FREE I love using free printables in my decor and Iย found these cuties here.
  • misc decor – I shopped my home for most things which is always a great way to decorate a space on a budget.

I obviously struggled with staying on budget with this makeover. Had the paint snafu never occurred, I would have come in under budget!

Overall, this challenge is a super fun way to gussyย up a room on a budget. It takes some elbow grease and creativity but I think anyone can do it if they put their mind to it.

Don’t forget to check out all of the awesome reveals this week. I can’t wait to see how all of the spaces I’ve been following come together in the final week.

Are you feeling inspired to make over your own space? What space would you redo for $100?
