Creating Art Out Of Old Book Pages

Hey there! Now that the holiday season has passed and we are seeing glimpses of spring, I am feeling the need to change up my decor yet again. My mantel always takes center stage so I am sharing with you how I created art out of old book pages. After Christmas, I went neutral and incorporated in some plaid and fluffy pillows – cause who doesn’t love a good fluffy pillow? 😉 I just stumbled upon the cutest Magnolia pillow on accident at Home Goods. I say on accident cause I didn’t even know that Home Goods carried Magnolia. Oops, the secret is out! I love that it has black in it which is hello, the best neutral, as well as a few hints of blue and lots of green and cream. I have all of the Hearth & Hand with Magnolia houses – black, white and wood. These play nicely into my neutral color theme.

My mantel is a big space that commands a big piece of art. I usually have an awesome chalkboard creation {thanks to my uber talented sister in law} or some type of framed printable that I found for free over at Pinterest. I decided that I wanted something different. So I put on my decorating thinking cap and voila, I came up with this fun idea!

How did I create this masterpiece {sometimes I like to pretend that I am an artist – oh hey Picasso}? Well, I used a few things that I already had.

  • large framed chalkboard {which I made with MDF, chalk paint and a barn wood frame from Hobby Lobby so I can easily repaint the chalkboard if I get tired of the book pages}
  • old book {thrift store find}
  • double-sided tape {as suggested by Erin over at Cotton Stem}

I just tore out the pages and stuck each page on haphazardly with a couple of pieces of double-sided tape until the whole thing was covered.

I figure if I get tired of it, I can take the pages off and reuse it as a chalkboard. If there is any damage from the tape, a quick sanding plus a fresh quote of chalkboard paint will make it new again.

It was easy peasy and changed up my mantel in a fun + creative way. Plus it didn’t take much time at all. Isn’t cheap decor the best? Have you used old books in your home decor? They are so great for stacking and using in vignettes. I love old vintage books but in a pinch, I will use paperbacks and flip them around to make them look vintage. Ta-da!

Do you see my two-tone mantel? I am getting ready to paint my entire interior {yes, my husband does think that I am crazy for this but I own my crazy! Ha ha}. I wanted to test out the paint color in various rooms to make sure that I love it. It’s called Hazelnut Cream by Behr. It’s what I used in my $100 master bedroom makeover. It’s a very light cream and really brightens a space.
