One Room Challenge – Week 3: Paint Happy

Hey friends! This week has been full of hard labor in the laundry room. The wood countertops went in as did the shiplap walls. I also painted the walls and the work has begun on the cabinets. I got them all cleaned up and they should be done being primed and painted by the end of the week. We had a few glitches this week. Nothing major but I thought I’d share the real-life issues that a makeover can have. First off, my hubby cut the boards for our shiplap wall at 4 inches instead of 6. Oops! Not a huge deal. More upfront work for him but it still looks fab on the wall. The second oops wasn’t really an oops. I got the walls painted, aside from the shiplap wall as that just went up yesterday, using Magnolia Shiplap white. Guess what? I am not loving it. Ugh. It looks like baby blue in the evening and that’s gonna make me CRAZY so they whole room is getting repainted. I am looking at whites that don’t have blue or yellow tints to them. #liveandlearn I think per the suggestion of an amazing designer friend of mine, I am going to use Swiss Coffee by Kelly Moore. It feels a lot warmer and that’s what this space needs.

We also ordered the sink and faucet. I am excited for those to arrive and be installed. * UPDATE: They’ve arrived! Once they are in, I will get the countertops stained and sealed. I opted to use Minwax Dark Walnut Stain as it’s one of my faves and we have a whole can of it.  It’s my go-to stain and I just used it outside on a buffet table. It’s a rich dark brown and I think it will make everything else really stand out. I will then seal the countertops with Mixwax Polycrylic in a satin finish.

I am hoping that we will be able to get the tile done next week, on my husband’s next four day off cycle. Once that happens, it’ll be mostly finishing details like decor. I should also mention that we got a quote for moving the washer to another wall and it was coming back at $800-1000 so we decided to scrap that idea B U T I did decide to try my best to talk my hubby into buying the matching washer for the space. Stay tuned to see if my sweet talking was effective. Fingers crossed as it would really make this space feel so polished and pulled together.

Next week, we will likely get the linoleum pulled out, all the cabinets should be completed and reinstalled, the walls will have their new and permanent paint color, the countertop will be stained and sealed and the new faucet will be installed.

Whew. I am whooped friends! This is going to look so great when it’s done but it’s been a serious labor of love already. Stay tuned for the next update where we should see things really coming together. I am A L M O S T looking forward to doing laundry.

  1. You are really making head way! If you find the dark walnut stain not dark enough or on the green side layer another stain on top that has a red tone in it. Because red & green are opposite on the color wheel this staining combo always give a nice rich result.
I can’t wait to see the finished product!

  2. The counter tops look amazing. Really love that look. I hate it when you purchase paint and do all that work only to not like it. Happened to us with the living room. Swiss Coffee is nice and will look amazing with your counter tops an accent wall.
